The M44 was one of Russia's later carbine iteration of the 1891/30 rifle. Compared to the 91/30's the M44 is about 9 inches shorter, This sure helped the soldiers moving in tight quarters and getting into these new fangled machines called tanks. The production run of the M44 ran from 1943 to the late 1950s. The fixed magazine holds 5 rounds. This gun is very loud and the recoil is very stout. The 7.62x54r cartridge is still kept in general service with Russian army for more than 110 years! Overall, this was somewhat typical example of the Russian mass produced weapon - cheap, simple, reliable and adequate for intended mission. See a more in depth history of the M44 here.
